GE turned off the iconic GE monogram sign on Building 19 after the Pearl Harbor attacks in 1941, partly to support the war effort and partly to make the plant less of a target for the Axis Powers as America entered World War II.
On this day in 1945, the sign was re-lit and was a continuous part of the Fort Wayne skyline until 2016. ...
Born in India and educated in England, my great grandfather, Edward Alexander Barnes, began his electrical career in 1884 with the Edison interests in London. He joined the Fort Wayne Electric Company in 1889, which later mergered with G.E.
Over the years, he worked his way up from chief inspector to general superintendent. He resigned in June of 1931 after 42 years with the company. He was one of the last members of the Edison Pioneers, former associates of ""The Wizard of Menlo Park"" (Thomas Edison), and is considered to be one of the country's leading electrical pioneers.

My father, Herschel Odier, graduated from GE apprentice school around 1927 and then worked as a tool and die maker, inspector, etc. until his retirement in 1972. He rarely missed days of work. Most of his time was spent at the Broadway plant, but did work for a short time at the Winter Street plant. He contributed some new ideas that enhanced GE manufacturing and was paid a reward for them.
Thanks to Sharon (Odier) Winans for telling us about your dad!

An original memorial on the Electric Works campus is dedicated to the selfless sacrifice of those who gave their lives in defense of our country in World War I — 748 men and women from the Works went into military service during WW1. Six lost their lives.
The memorial once sat at the SW corner of Broadway and Wall Street, before the Works expanded to the west side of Broadway. Now, the monument is located in McCulloch Park and lists employees of the Fort Wayne Works General Electric Company who served in WW1.
This Memorial Day, we honor our nation's heroes. “We don’t know them all, but we owe them all.”
